Republicans offer Israel green light to bomb Iran

Republicans in the US House of Representatives have introduced a resolution that would support Israel in the use of all means necessary, including military force, against Iran.

“Obviously we are reaching silly season in Washington with the elections in November and for that there have already been some signs that Israel is going to be a major element that some Republicans will use to get both voters as well as finance, donations to campaigns, away from the Democrats,” said Trita Parsi, a public policy scholar from the Woodrow Wilson Center.

The problem is however, “even silly season has real repercussions on the real world” and that the resolution sends a dangerous signal to Israel that some in congress would welcome military action by Israel against Iran, even though the White House and US military have spoken out against it, argued Parsi.

The resolution could possibly even be seen as encouragement to act by congress, he argued, essentially removing some of the political hurdles that have prevented military action. In essence, congress would be giving advance permission for military actions.

Investigative journalist Wayne Madsen argued that the resolution is merely a propaganda tool being deployed by the Tea Party Caucus members to play to the Tea Party movement for the upcoming November elections.

“This is playing to the tea bag base of the Republican Party. With these individuals in congress being used to sponsor this resolution, you have to wonder who ultimately is backing the tea party movement and for what purposes,” said Madsen.

“This is playing with nuclear fire,” Madsen later added.
