Volleyball: Zenit-Kazan fails to make final

Men’s volleyball teams Dynamo Moscow and Iskra from the Moscow region will fight it out in the Russian Cup final on Sunday. Dynamo beat defending title holders and European champions Zenit-Kazan 3-1 to earn a shot at the title.

Also on Sunday, Zenit and Lokomotiv will compete for the third place.

Kazan’s defeat to Dynamo came as something of surprise to many volleyball fans.  

Established in 2000 as Dynamo, Zenit-Kazan is the youngest team in the Russian super league. They reached the top division just three seasons later.

The Holders of Russian Cup in 2004 and 2007, the team also won the 2007-08 CEV Champions League title. On 30 March in Lodz, Polandj, the team from the Republic of Tatarstan gained a victory in the fifth set over Copra Piacenza and set a unique achievement by winning the most prestigious European trophy at first attempt.
