Zvonareva in US Open quarter-finals, Sharapova and Kuznetsova out

Zvonareva in US Open quarter-finals, Sharapova and Kuznetsova out

Russia’s Vera Zvonareva has successfully made it through to the quarter-finals of the US Open, while her compatriots Maria Sharapova are Svetlana Kuznetsova leaving Flushing Meadows.

Seventh-seed Zvonareva outclassed Andrea Petkovic of Germany in straight sets. The Wimbledon finalist dropped only three games during the match to claim a confident 6-1, 6-2 victory.

Zvonareva will play Kaia Kanepi of Estonia for a place in the last four.

Meanwhile, Maria Sharapova failed to join her in the Last 8, losing to top seed Caroline Wozniacki.

The Dane was in total control during this match and closed a comfortable win, 6-3 6-4.

Wozniacki will next play Dominika Cibulkova, who beat another Russian, Svetlana Kuznetsova.

The 11th-seed struggled against the unseeded Slovakian, who wrapped up a two-set victory, 7-5 7-6.

On the men’s side, Roger Federer has booked his place in the quarter-finals. The five-time US Open champion saw off Jurgen Melzer of Austria in straight sets, 6-3 7-6 6-3, to set up a showdown with Robin Soderling.

Fifth-seeded Soderling had to come from a set down to register a four-set win over Albert Montanes of France.

The Spaniard took the opener 6-4, but the beaten finalist of the last two French Opens was able to find his game to win the next three, 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-3.

Novak Djokovic also cruised into the Last 8 by beating local athlete Mardy Fish.

The third-seeded Serb needed just an hour and 50 minutes to claim a straight sets win, 6-3 6-4 6-1.

Djokovic's quarter-final opponent is Gael Monfils, who came out a winner from an all-French affair with Richard Gasquet.

Monfils was faster and more powerful than his compatriot, depriving Gasquet of reaching the Last 8 for the first time, 6-4 7-5 7-5.
