Martial law on till unions stop strike: Guinea Military Head

Martial law on till unions stop strike: Guinea Military Head

The Guinea’s Military Head has said that a martial law, declared on Monday by the President, Lansana Conte, would only be lifted when labour unions agreed to end their general strike.

Lansana Conte declared the martial law, after dozens were killed in weekend riots between protesters and security forces.

Union heads and opposition leaders have called for Conte to step down.

They accuse him of violating a power-sharing agreement after naming a political ally as Prime Minister last week.
