Weapons depot explosion in Mozambique kills nine

At least nine people have been killed in an explosion at Mozambique's national weapons depot near Maputo airport. Thousands fled their homes as the blast wave shook buildings in the city centre. 

A child is reportedly among the fatalities.

President Armando Guebuza appeared on national television to call for calm as firefighters and members of the military tried to control the blaze.
