Komova wins first Russian gold at Gymnastics Worlds

Komova wins first Russian gold at Gymnastics Worlds

Russia’s Viktoria Komova has triumphed in the women’s uneven bars competition at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in the Japanese capital, Tokyo.

The 16-year-old received 15,500 points from the judges to leave compatriot Tatiana Nabieva with silver, with third place going to Huang Qiushuang of China.

"Yes, I understood that I was the favorite on the uneven bars, but drove those thoughts away,” Komova told ITAR-TASS news agency. “I repeated my combination inside my head, as well as on the floor. I was a little cautious while performing because I was afraid to make even the smallest mistake. In addition, we warmed up in another gym, which was a bit strange."

“I haven’t yet realized that I have become the world champion. I feel only relief," she added.

It’s the third medal in Tokyo for Komova, who has also brought her country silver in individual and team all-around.

Despite having won their first gold, Team Russia are still out of the top three in the Worlds medals count, which is topped by the US with three golds and one bronze.
