Victims of secret CIA prisons to get compensation

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has approved a report on secret CIA prisons in Europe. It was presented on Wednesday by Swedish parliamentarian Dick Marty.

The Assembly also passed a resolution vowing to rehabilitate and compensate those who were held in the clandestine detention camps.

The PACE session is also scheduled to debate anti-semitism in Europe.  The head of the International Affairs Committee of Russia's upper house of parliament – Mikhail Margelov – has spoken on the issue.

“For most European countries anti-semitism is unfortunately a problem not of the past but of the present.  Even Eastern European countries, which suffered a lot during the Holocaust, are seeing anti-Jewish behaviour.  So too are some post-Soviet republics.  Russia isn’t excluded in this regard either,” he pointed out in an interview with RT ahead of the gathering.

In the meantime, the head of Russia's State Duma International Affairs Committee, Konstantin Kosachyov, has said Russia will seek the detention of Ahmed Zakaev, who was spotted at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe's summer session.

Ahmed Zakaev is currently the subject of an international criminal search. He is suspected of organising and financing terrorist activities in Russia. In Strasbourg Zakaev did not address the Assembly but was seen talking to the media.

Russia has filed requests to the British authorities for his extradition on several occasions since he received political asylum in the UK in 2003.
