Davydenko at centre of betting probe

Tennis star Nikolay Davydenko is at the centre of an illegal betting investigation. That’s after he retired from his second round tie at the Sopot Open with an injury.

The Russian pulled out of the third set in Poland against Argentine, Martin Arguello.

Bookmakers Betfair said nearly $US 7 MLN was wagered before the match and during the first set. That’s ten times the typical amount for this sort of contest.

Davydenko says he had a foot injury.

Betfair are now looking into the irregular betting patterns and have informed the governing body of the men’s game, the ATP.
