Georgia snubs Nicaragua over Caucasus

Georgia has announced it has broken off diplomatic ties with Nicaragua. The Central American state is the only country apart from Russia to recognise the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia following the Georgian war in August.

An official from the Georgian Foreign Ministry broke the news via a note handed over to the Nicaraguan mission at the UN in New York.

Back in September, the President of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, said it was only a matter of time before the newly-independent states of South Ossetia and Abkhazia won widespread recognition.

Earlier, Georgia cut off diplomatic links with Russia. Moscow responded by closing its embassy in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, and recalling its diplomats in September.
