The Media Mirror - Today's Russian press review

The Russian press covers the meeting between President Putin and Nursultan Nazarbayev and the CIS leaders’ summit in Dushanbe. It also looks at the historic summit of the leaders of the two Koreas.

ROSSIYSKAYA GAZETA reports on the meeting of President Putin with his colleague from Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev. The two leaders met in Novosibirsk at the fourth annual forum on the development of the border adjacent regions.

The paper writes, in his opening remarks President Putin said the volume of bilateral trade may reach $US 16 BLN this year. That would make the volume of cross-border trade over $US 7 BLN.

The Russian President said he was expecting the joint action plan for 2007-2008 to produce significant results.

IZVESTIA reports on the same event with an emphasis on the exhibition of border guard equipment the two Presidents visited together.

NEZAVISIMAYA GAZETA writes, after the forum both Presidents flew to Tajikistan for a regular summit of the heads of state of the CIS countries. The paper calls the meeting “A Summit of Compromise.” Over 2000 government officials and 300 accredited journalists from the member nations of the Commonwealth of Independent States gathered in Dushanbe. The paper says Azerbaijan and Georgia may not be ready to sign the main document of the summit – the Concept of the Further Development of the CIS.

The paper writes Georgia’s President Mikhail Saakashvili is not going to stay in Dushanbe for the grand birthday party of two Presidents – of Russia and Tajikistan. Both leaders will celebrate their 55th birthdays.

IZVESTIA reports on the historic summit of the leaders of the two Koreas. The paper says, for the first time such a summit concentrated on concrete bilateral actions of trust like the future peace treaty, the re-opening of railway and air communication.

MOSKOVSKI KOMSOMOLETS quotes Russian experts: the return to the four-party peace negotiations, proposed during the summit and meaning the two Koreas, China and the U.S. may damage Russia’s interests in the Far East.

IZVESTIA publishes the translation of an article by Professor Norman Stone from The Times’ issue of October 4. The writer says Russia and Britain are alike in one sense: they are both historical survivors. Today’s Russia is on the rise after the 1990s like Britain came back after the 1970s. Speaking of the critics of today’s Russia the author says Vladimir Putin is a very successful President. He rescued Russia from disaster, so let’s just leave him be.
