Media blitz starts in Russian election

The official Russian election media campaign has begun. In one month, voters will go to the polls to elect the new lower house of Russia's parliament, known as the State Duma.

Eleven Parties will be given free air time on TV and radio to present their policies to voters.

Because the campaign started on a Saturday, which is a day-off in Russia, the free-of-charge campaigning will be moved to the first working day next week.

However, candidates will be able to present their platforms from Saturday, if they pay for it.

Party political broadcasts will be on three TV channels and three radio stations.

During the month of the official campaign, the parties can also advertise in the print media.

Campaigning ends a day before the election, in what is known as ‘a day of silence’.
