Russian FM: NATO must abide by rules

Russia’s Foreign Minister says relations between NATO and Russia will go smoothly providing both sides honour existing agreements. Sergey Lavrov made the statement at a meeting with his Norwegian counterpart in Moscow.

Lavrov said relations between Moscow and NATO only suffered when one side took 'unilateral decisions' without consulting the other.  “For instance, the decision to deploy elements of the U.S. missile-shield in Europe.” he said.

“There will be no problems between NATO and Russia if we're all guided by agreements, in particular an agreement that no member of the NATO-Russia council can take steps… that would jeopardise the security of any other member”.

The Russian Foreign Minister was meeting with his Norwegian counterpart, Jonas Gahr Støre.

As well as defence, the two men discussed a fishing partnership and trade ties between Russia and Norway.

Among international issues on the agenda were environmental concerns, Kosovo and the Middle East.
