Georgia rejects Russian election observers

The government in Georgia says Russian observers will not be invited to the country to monitor the presidential election on 5 January. Party representatives say the decision follows alleged anti-Georgian statements made by the United Russia party after S

Invitations to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the Council of Europe have already been sent out.  Their representatives are due to arrive in Georgia within days.

The campaign is now in full swing.

Candidates are rushing to collect the 50,000 signatures they need to stand.

The signatures will be handed over to the Central Election Committee by 6 December. 
A final list of candidates will be made public next Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Georgian government has asked the Prosecutor General’s Office to lift the ban on the opposition-backed Imedi TV channel.

It was taken off air on November 7 when a state of emergency was imposed in the country amid mass anti-government rallies. 

The journalists hope they will resume work in a week.
