A book, a movie, and now...an opera! Steve Jobs’ life to hit Santa Fe stage in 2017

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs will be the subject of a new work commissioned by the Santa Fe Opera in New Mexico. Jobs’ life and legacy in technological innovation in personal computers is already the subject of a documentary, book, movie and graphic novel.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs will be the subject of a new work commissioned by the Santa Fe Opera in New Mexico. Jobs’ life and legacy of technological innovation is already the subject of a documentary, book, movie and graphic novel.

The opera, titled “The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs,” according to an announcement made at the Santa Fe Opera house on Wednesday, will premiere during the company’s 2017 season and will be written by composer Mason Bates and librettist Mark Campbell.

[The opera continues] the tradition of producing work that pushes the boundaries of the art form. We are delighted to take this journey into the life and legacy of a distinctly American figure,” said SFO’s general director, Charles MacKay, in a statement.

The biographic opera will examine the life of the computer pioneer, an innovator who simplified communications with sleek devices.

The opera starts “when [Job’s] must face his own mortality, and circles back to events and people in his past that shaped and inspired him,” according to Bates.

Jobs’ relationship with his father will be woven into the story, as well as, Zen Buddhism, his relationships with women and his wife, and his quick rise and fall as a mogul.

The opera will also emphasize how Jobs “paradoxically learned that complex human relationships requires more than one button to work,” said Bates.

"Each character will have (his or her) own music," he told the Associated Press. "When they collide, that's when it gets interesting."

It will be the first opera produced by Bates, who gained national attention over the past decade by fusing traditional symphonic resources with electronic sounds, according to the Santa Fe Opera. Armed with a laptop computer, he often performs during the presentation of his compositions. Mark Campbell, meanwhile, has authored 15 librettos since the mid-1990s, including the opera “Silent Night.”

Apple company spokeswoman Kristin Huguet did not immediately respond to an email from the AP for comment about the opera.

Jobs died in 2011 at the age of 56 after a long fight with cancer.
