Hijab-wearing Muslim teenager brutally attacked in London amid hate crime surge (VIDEO)

Disturbing footage showing a hijab-wearing teenager being knocked unconscious on the streets of east London has been republished to demonstrate the reality of soaring rate of racial hate crimes in Britain.

The video shows Tasneem Kabir, 16, being ambushed by Michael Ayoade, 34, as she walked to college in Plaistow on the afternoon of November 13, 2012. 

The attacker, originally from Nigeria, was jailed for four years after pleading guilty to two “vicious” attacks that left Kabir laying helpless on the ground with a smashed lip and broken teeth.

The attack on Kabir is just one of the many cases of Islamophobia investigated by the BBC’s “Inside Out” London special “Behind the Veil,” which aired Monday evening.

In the program, one young Muslim woman spoke about women’s experiences of being attacked, verbally abused and spat at on the streets of London.

One victim told the BBC many Muslim girls are “scared” to report incidents to the police.

“I know young Muslim women that have been attacked but they are too scared to go to the police about it,” said Meanha Begum, 18, who wears a full veil.

Begum said one of her close friends was attacked by a woman carrying a knife, who ripped off her face veil and pushed her to the floor.

Another victim said an aggressive man yelled at her, “Your people are killing Christians in the Middle East.”

“I was walking to work and this man came towards me. I thought he was going to punch me. It’s like he saw me and he just went mad,” said 31-year-old Sahina Khan.

“He said something about ‘killing Christians in the Middle East’ or ‘your people killing Christians in the Middle East’ and he was just ranting at me,” she added.

This investigation came as Scotland Yard released figures indicating the number of recorded hate crimes had almost doubled in the 12 months to June from 406 to 800.

The overall number of racist and religious hate crimes across the capital rose by nearly 28 percent last year, from 9,965 reported incidents to 12,749.

However, Tell MAMA, an organization monitoring Islamophobic attacks, claims Muslim women are the primary targets.

A spokesperson for the charity said female victims often avoid contacting the police because they fear it could make matters worse.

Additional police figures obtained by RT earlier this year also show racially or religiously aggravated harassment crimes – such as verbal or written racist abuse – increased from 15,249 to 17,605 between 2012 and 2014.
