Dog in the manger? Austrian granny cuts up €950,000 of inheritance money to bits

Dog in the manger? Austrian granny cuts up €950,000 of inheritance money to bits

Savings account books and €950,000 ($1 million) in cash were found shredded in an old lady’s care home bed in Austria, after the 85-year-old woman died. Authorities suspect she wanted to spite her heirs.

The discovery was first made public in the Austrian Kurier daily newspaper, and then confirmed by state prosecutors, AFP reported.

“The damage of the money in the woman’s property is not a criminal matter, so we have not begun any investigation,” prosecutor Erich Habitzl told the news agency, saying there was nothing he could do for the relatives.

However, the Kurier reported that the relatives of the apparently greedy granny could still have the last laugh – but they will first have to stoop before her death bed to collect the pieces of the torn banknotes.

“If the heirs can only find shreds of money and if the origin of the money is assured, then of course it can all be replaced,” the media cited an official from Austria’s central bank (OeNB) as saying. “If we didn’t pay out the money, then we would be punishing the wrong people,” deputy head of the OeNB cashier division Friedrich Hammerschmidt said.
