Armenian election: PM likely to become new president

Armenia's Prime Minister Serzh Sarkisyan has been declared the winner of the country's presidential election.

The Central Election Committee made the announcement with 90 per cent of the votes counted. Sarkisyan's closest rival, former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan, received just over 20 per cent of the vote.

The opposition claims the election was rigged and is calling for its supporters to protest.

Voting has been monitored by international observers, who are yet to declare the poll free and fair.
