‘US gun-free zones: Shooting galleries for criminals against innocent people'

US gun-free zones are dangerous areas where criminals come and attack and sometimes kill law-abiding citizens, says Murdoch Pizgatti, the president and co-founder of Dontcomply.com website.

Speaking about the benefits of responsible gun ownership in the wake of yet another mass shooting event in the United States, Pizgatti says that the increasing incidences of gun-related mass shootings, like the one that just occurred in San Bernadino, California, makes the task of getting out the message on gun rights all the more essential.

“It’s even more of a reason to make people understand that the common thread in all of these mass murders has been gun-free zones,” Pizgatti told RT in an interview. “They are the areas that are sought after by these evil people to go and commit murder.”

The comments in defense of gun rights come in the wake of the December 2 mass shooting in San Bernadino, California that left 14 dead and 17 more wounded. Police said Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, a married couple, attacked a San Bernardino County Department of Public Health facility. The pair were eventually killed during a shootout with police following a massive manhunt.

The US has one of the world's worst records for gun crimes, with the latest attack in San Bernardino being the 353rd mass shooting in 2015. About 33,000 Americans are killed every year from gun-related incidences. The surge in deaths by firearms has provoked a fierce political battle between Americans who want to see restrictions placed on the Second Amendment “right to bear arms.”

Pro-gun lobbies, however, like the influential National Rifle Association (NRA), argue on behalf of gun owners, saying the purpose of the Second Amendment is essential to protecting the American people from the threat – as understood by the Founding Fathers – of a tyrannical government.

Pizgatti said the government, by creating these gun-free zones, have in essence created a “shooting gallery for bad people to go and take advantage of unarmed people.”

“The laws they put in place in a gun-free zone only apply to good, law-abiding citizens,” Pizgatti said. “The criminal is not going to pay attention to a sign that says, ‘No guns allowed.’

“Only the good people leave their guns at home.”

American neighborhoods, saturated as they are with a variety of firearms, would be in a much better situation, Pizgatti argues, if citizens were able to “arm and defend themselves” against potential criminals and murderers.

“If we look at the recent shootings, like in California, there was no way to tell that those people were going to commit terrorist activities – everything was done legally in one of the most restrictive states under some of the most restrictive gun laws. So the best way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun.”

“This is what the American Founders had in mind when they wrote the Second Amendment.”
