Man Utd smash and grab as Chelsea leave it late with offside equalizer

The English Premier League saw some important results over the weekend, with Manchester United winning at Anfield and Chelsea netting a controversial last-gasp equalizer.

A total of 27 goals were scored in nine games, with a number of key talking points emerging from Saturday and Sunday’s action.

Chelsea get rub of the green with Terry equalizer

Floundering Premier League champions Chelsea looked set to slump to another home defeat against Everton on Saturday, but a contentious goal deep into injury time salvaged a point for Guus Hiddink’s men.

The Blues had fought back from 2-0 down in a pulsating second-half to make it 2-2, before a 90th-minute Ramiro Funes Mori strike looked to have secured all three points for the visitors.

However, captain John Terry’s back heel flick rescued a point for the Stamford Bridge side in the 98th minute, sending the home faithful into rapture.

The former England captain was in an offside position though, which an irate Roberto Martinez was quick to point out in the aftermath of the game.

The result leaves Chelsea still languishing near the wrong end of the table in 14th place, while Everton sit in 11th position.

Man United win dull clash at Anfield

Manchester United’s trip to face Liverpool at Anfield was one of the most highly-anticipated games of the weekend, but the clash failed to live up to expectations as both sides showed limited potency in the final third.

Wayne Rooney did however manage to continue his recent goalscoring run with a decisive strike late in the game to complete a smash and grab for Louis van Gaal’s men. Rooney has now scored five goals in his last four games, giving United the perfect boost in the new year.

The result keeps the Red Devils in touch with the top four, while Jurgen Klopp’s side are left toiling in mid-table.

Involving two clubs that are arguably the most historic in English football, the flat nature of the derby game suggests both sides have a long way to go to return to former glories.

Five points separates the top four

It is one of the most open title races in recent memory, with the top two both drawing and the two sides chasing them recording victories to close things up.

Arsenal were held 0-0 at the Britannia Stadium against Stoke, riding their luck to some degree, while surprise package Leicester City drew 1-1 away to bottom-of-the-table Aston Villa.

Manchester City flexed their muscles in a 4-0 rout of Crystal Palace, while Tottenham started the weekend’s action with a commanding 4-1 victory over Sunderland, meaning just five points now separate the top four teams.
