Pilot killed as Russian helicopter crashes in Tajik mountains

One man has been killed and five injured after a Russian-made helicopter carrying a group of foreign climbers crashed in the mountains in south-east Tajikistan. The accident occurred when the Mi-8 was travelling from the capital Dushanbe to the south-east

There were 11 foreign climbers from Europe on board.  

The pilot was killed in the crash in the Pamir Mountains and five people, including a Russian and French climber, were injured. They have been taken to hospital and are out of danger, according to the Tajik Interior Ministry.  

The cause of the crash is being investigated.

There have been more than 20 crashes of Mi-8 helicopters over the last seven years.
