Serbia rules out embargo on Kosovo

Serbia will not impose economic sanctions on Kosovo in the wake of its independence, according Serbia's Foreign Minister. Vuk Jeremic has told the UN Security Council that while Serbia strongly opposes its independence his country wants all of Kosovo's c

“It is in our vital interest that all of Kosovo's communities prosper – and prosper together in peace, security and reconciliation as neighbours in a progressive society of hope and forgiveness,” Vuk Jeremic said.

Previously, Belgrade warned it would use all economic, political and diplomatic means at its disposal to prevent Kosovo from seceding.

The 15-nation Security Council has been deadlocked for months over the issue.

Russia and China have been blocking UN attempts to pass a resolution that would elevate Kosovo to full statehood. While other permanent Council members Britain, France and the United States have recognised its independence.

Edward Luck from the International Peace Academy based in New York, is cautious about the prospects of an independent Kosovo. He says the success of its economy will help determine if it will become a fully-fledged country or remain another adopted orphan of the West.

“Kosovo is not capable of defending and protecting itself in a military sense, it is still highly dependent on the international community for economic and financial support,” he said.
