Another Oscar awaits DiCaprio in Russia’s Yakutia, made of fan-donated jewelry

Leonardo Di Caprio has finally snatched his first Academy Award, but he may now get his second statuette in a row after fans in Russia’s Republic of Yakutia donated their jewelry to craft an Oscar of their own for the US actor.

The star of “The Revenant” has been invited to the Russian Far East to receive the so-called ‘Yakutian Oscar.’

“We are so proud of Leo. We congratulate him. Send our greeting from Yakutia,” Sardana Savvina, organizer of the “Oscar for Leo!” campaign, told RT.

The idea of making a Yakutian Oscar for the actor, who was denied an Academy Award despite five nominations ahead of the 2016 ceremony, was “very spontaneous,” she said.

But it garnered an enormous level of support from the movie-lovers, with a lot of people gathering their jewelry to support the cause.

“In the end, we collected around 1.4 kilograms of silver. Then our designers and jeweler makers helped us melt a special Yakutian Oscar,” Savvina said.

The Yakutian Oscar mostly resembles its American counterpart, but has Asian features characteristic of the Yakut people.

In “The Revenant,” DiCaprio portrayed a 19th century American frontiersman, mauled by a bear during a winter expedition and left for dead by his companions.

The grandmother of the 41-year-old actor was from Russia and he refers to himself as “half-Russian” because of that.
