Anti-Trump protesters rush California GOP convention as candidate approaches

Police have squared off against hundreds of people protesting GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump outside the party convention in Burlingame, California, a day after a similar protest in Orange County turned violent.

All available officers have been ordered to patrol the protests in case they get out of control, Lieutenant Jay Kiely told the Los Angeles Times.

The two-day convention will feature the remaining candidates for the Republican presidential nomination. Trump is scheduled to speak Friday, followed by Ohio Governor John Kasich. Texas Senator Ted Cruz is scheduled to appear Saturday at lunch, followed by Carly Fiorina, former HP executive he tapped for his running mate.

Attendees have already started gathering at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, where the convention is taking place.

Burlingame is a city in San Mateo County, just south of San Francisco. California's primary is scheduled for June 7.

Protesters appear to have broken through police barriers and rushed the hotel.

Some protesters have chained themselves together to block protests.

Trump arrived at the convention through a back entrance. When he began his speech, he told attendees: "That wasn't the easiest entrance I ever made. It felt like I was crossing the border."

The protesters can be seen from inside the convention lobby.

At least one person has been detained at the protest, according to the Los Angeles Times' Javier Panzar.
