Fury vs. Klitschko rematch date set

Fury vs. Klitschko rematch date set

The date for the heavyweight boxing rematch between Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko has been set, according the Ukrainian fighter’s manager Bernd Boente.

Boente named the date of October 29 for the bout.

The original rematch, scheduled for July 9, was postponed due to Fury injuring his ankle while running during training in the Lake District in England.

There is some doubt as to the nature of Fury’s injury, however, with some reports claiming he was seen at a rave in Anglesey, Wales, and that he sustained the injury there.

The heavyweight champion has denied the allegations.

After announcing his injury through his social media accounts, Fury was advised by doctors to rest his ankle for six to seven weeks.

Fury has also been dogged by doping allegations in recent weeks, with a UK tabloid newspaper reporting that the boxer had failed a drug test in 2015.

Boente has expressed his desire for a full investigation of Fury by the UK Anti-Doping agency.

Boente seems certain of the date of the rematch, regardless of Fury’s potential investigation.

“Namely, [Fury versus Klitschko 2 is] on October 29 in Manchester Arena. The rest [the drug investigation] is not in our hands," Boente told Sport Bild.

Fury’s motives have been questioned after rumors of jumping with football fans at Euro 2016, hours after cancelling the initial rematch.

It is the second time the rematch has been postponed, after Klitschko had previously withdrawn with a training injury.

Meanwhile, the 40-year-old Ukrainian was said to have been training at full tilt in preparation for the fight as he seeks to win back his titles.

Fury defeated Klitschko by a unanimous points decision in November to claim the WBA (Super), WBO, IBF and IBO heavyweight titles.

He was later stripped of his IBF title after agreeing to a re-match with Klitschko, rather than facing the IBF mandatory challenger, Vyacheslav Glazkov.
