Colorado marijuana grow house invasion ends in fatal shooting

Colorado marijuana grow house invasion ends in fatal shooting

Police are seeking a homicide suspect after a home invasion in a marijuana grow house left a man dead in an area west of Denver, Colorado.

The man, whose name has not been released, died of a gunshot wound on Thursday, after he was found on the street, the Adams County Sheriff’s said, according to the Denver Post. The crime scene spanned two city blocks.

Several police sources told KCNC that deputies were investigating the shooting as a result of a home invasion at a marijuana grow house.

Adams County Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Kaiser told the news outlet they are not releasing that person’s name.

“We’re not sure if he’s a suspect or his status, were just looking for someone that is involved,” Kaiser said.

Police sources said a person inside the grow house shot one of the suspects trying to break inside, attempting to steal pot plants.

They are searching for a known person who was involved in some way in the confrontation. It is unclear what role, if any, that person had in the shooting.

Hank McDonald, a resident, told KCNC that police had been gathering evidence all day.

“They picked up a lot of information and bagged it all up,” he says. “Then the body was over kind of in the window well in this end.”

The coroner has not released the identity of the man who was shot dead.

It is the second home invasion in Colorado in several months to result in a fatal shooting.

Back in May, robbers shot a 20-year-old Fort Lewis College student in his home after trying to steal his marijuana. The college is in the southwest of state.

Durango Police said investigators believed that four Arizona men arrested in the case were trying to steal a large amount of pot from Samuel Gordon when they shot him in the stomach. The four, all in their teens and early 20s, were being held without bail and charged with suspicion of first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping and aggravated robbery.

Detectives said the men broke into Gordon’s home wearing bandanas on their faces and armed with handguns. Five people inside the house were taken hostage.

“At some point during the armed intrusion, Mr. Gordon was shot once in the stomach,” police told the Denver Post in May.

Gordon was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Colorado is among 25 states where marijuana is legal for medical or recreational use.

Several state governors are pressing the Obama administration to reclassify marijuana as a Schedule I controlled drug. Schedule 1, drugs are considered to have a high potential for abuse, and no accepted medical use, making it illegal to make, possess and distribute. Other schedule 1 drugs include LSD and heroin.

On August 11, the Drug Enforcement Administration rejected a request to reclassify marijuana as a Schedule II controlled substance, arguing it was not a safe and effective medicine.

The National Cannabis Industry Association said the DEA’s decision “flies in the face of objective science and overwhelming public opinion,” according to UPI.

Five states are voting on the question of legalizing recreational marijuana use this November, among them California.
