RT RECEIVES UN CORRESPONDENTS ASSOCIATION AWARD FOR COVERAGE OF HISTORIC UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

MOSCOW, NOVEMBER 14, 2016 –RT was awarded a silver medal at the UNCA Awards, organized by the UN Correspondents Association, for its coverage of the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015.

RT correspondents streamed a continuous live broadcast during the General Assembly’s 70th session from a special studio right next to the UN headquarters in New York. With the help of 3D technology, RT journalists showed viewers exactly how the iconic UN headquarters were built on the banks of the East River. They also provided thorough reporting on the security measures employed in New York City to handle any protests. As an experiment, they took a walk through the streets of New York wearing T-shirts with portraits of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Back in August 2016, RT’s series of special reports on the 70th session of the UN General Assembly earned the channel a nomination at the prestigious International Emmy Awards, making RT the first Russian channel to become a four-time iEmmy finalist for News.

Founded in 1948, the United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) currently includes some 200 media professionals from around the world. The annual UNCA Awards are presented to journalists in recognition of their excellence in reporting on the United Nations and its agencies. The awards are divided into four categories: the Elizabeth Neuffer Memorial Prize for written media, including online media (established in honor of an American journalist who was killed in Iraq in 2003), the Ricardo Ortega Memorial Prize for broadcast media (named after a Spanish reporter who was killed while covering the crisis in Haiti in 2004), the Prince Albert II of Monaco and UNCA Global Prize for covering climate change, and the UN Foundation Prize for covering UN humanitarian activities.
