Russian claims Chopin piano plaudits

Russian pianist Julianna Avdeeva has won the 16th International Chopin Piano Competition, which wrapped up in Warsaw on Wednesday evening.

At the final of the contest Julianna a presented concert for fortepiano with orchestra N1 e-moll Op. 11 and it was a great performance, according to the jury.

The winner is expected to receive The Polish president’s 30.000-euro cash prize, a gold medal and an opportunity to perform with one of the world’s oldest orchestras, the New York Philharmonic.

Four other Russian musicians also made it to the top ten of the competition. Lukas Geniusas, who represented Russia and Lithuania shared second prize with Austrian Ingolf Wunder.

19-year old Daniil Trifonov won the bronze medal and a special prize for the best performance of the mazurka.

The Chopin Piano Competition has been around since 1927 and is held in Warsaw every five years. This year, 80 young pianists from all over the world came to Poland for the event. The winners will play several gala concerts in Warsaw.
