Kosovo to have EU-run courts

The United Nations has passed a resolution that will see the EU take over justice functions in Kosovo. The UN will keep overall control of security in the newly-independent country.

Some 2,000 officers will be stationed at Kosovo’s borders, courts and police stations.

Kosovo declared independence last February, against the wishes of Belgrade, who vehemently opposed the move. Serbia insists Kosovo is one of its provinces. 

Mostly populated by ethnic Albanians, Kosovo’s independence has been recognized by some 50 countries, including the US, Japan and many EU states.

Russia has strongly opposed the declaration of sovereignty, saying it's a violation of the UN charter. However, Moscow voted in favour of the current UN proposal. Serbia itself also approved of it.
