Terrorist victims mourned in Russia

A minute of silence and a commemorating ceremony have been held in Moscow to remember the victims of the Guryanov Street blast in 1999. Relatives of the victims and local residents joined city officials to lay flowers at the site of the attack.

Eight years ago an explosion in the south-east of Moscow killed 106 people, shocking the nation. It was one in a whole string of terror attacks to hit Russia that autumn.

On August 31, Okhotny Ryad – Moscow's underground shopping centre near Red Square – was shaken by a blast, killing one woman and leaving 40 people hurt.

64 people were killed in an explosion in the southern city of Buynaksk, in the southern republic of Dagestan.

Two more explosions in Moscow – on Guryanov Street and Kashirskoe highway – left more than 220 people dead.

While 17 people were killed in a September 16 attack, in the town of Volgodonsk in the Rostov region.

In all, five terror attacks across Russia which left over 300 people killed and hundreds more injured.

No group took responsibility for the terror attacks but they were widely imputed to Chechen terrorists, becoming a rationale for the beginning of the second Chechen campaign against militants.
