Search for missing rafter called off

The search for a Russian who went missing in a six-man rafting expedition in China has been called off.

Chinese and Russian emergency crews have been looking for the missing rafters since September 6. More than a thousand emergency workers and several helicopters took part in the operation.

Viktor Beltsov, a representative for the Emergencies Ministry, says Chinese rescue teams are determined to carry on looking.

“Chinese emergency workers are continuing to search for the missing man on the ground. They are scouring the area around the Yurunkash River and have assured us they will continue their search. In the meantime, an Emergencies Ministry plane is heading back to Russia with the two survivors on board.  It's also carrying the bodies of the three rafters found dead,” he said.
