Seven dead in Siberian mine accident

The death toll from a mine accident in the Siberian Republic of Buryatia has reached seven people. One man has been found alive and three dead on Sunday as a result of a massive rescue operation at a disused tungsten mine. One person remains missing.

On Friday a group of around seven people went down illegally to look for tungsten ore in the disused mine despite warnings that it wasn't safe.

When they encountered a build-up of gas, one escaped and brought around a dozen locals to help. Down the mine, the newcomers were also affected by gas. Only some ten of them managed to return.

Rescuers from neighbouring regions are working alongside a local team to find the missing men.
