Russia Today: We are focusing of course on the meeting of the Russian President Vladimir Putin and the U.S. President George Bush. Many were predicting a confrontation here, a showdown that certainly how it was looking at the beginning between Russia and some other countries. Instead we seem to have a breakthrough, a cooling off on the issue. Is that your take as well?

Dmitry Peskov: Well, yes, a kind of confrontation during that bilateral meeting was expected widely, especially in press. Now we can say that the expectations were overexaggerated. But thanks God the course of the meeting went to the contrary – very positively, with very deep content and of course the initiative of President Putin was quite an important event globally, I think, for yesterday and it was going to be discussed for a certain time from now on and we would expect the creation of a working group between Russia and America with the participation of foreign ministries and the ministries of defence. Well, at least it was shown that both sides, Russia and the U.S. really do want to find a solution to the problem on a mutually acceptable basis and I think that what Russia did, it really demonstrated that it wants to solve this issue in a non-confrontational way.

RT: Indeed, as we look ahead here there are presumably a number of diplomatic and technical issues to discuss. Are there going to be further talks on this issue after this proposal?.

D.P.: You mean on the anti-missile shield?

RT: Yes.

D.P.: Yes, of course. As soon as the working group is created by both sides, they will start the negotiations and we have to understand that we are speaking about extremely sensitive and complicated negotiations between our diplomats and our military people. I mean the dimension is extremely sensitive and of course it will last, it will last for a certain time. So we should not expect immediate results in coming days. So we have to be patient. But at least the readiness of the U.S. to discuss that alternative and the initiatives of the Russian side, they are promising and let
