Indians condemn war in Gaza

India has joined the rest of the world in hoping for a lasting peace in Gaza. The force used by Israel and the large number of Palestinian civilian casualties has left many Indians in shock.

The official view is one of condemnation:

“Both the Congress party and the government of India has made its stand clear that we condemn the disproportionate use of force in Gaza,” said Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari.

Some opposition parties want more than just words. Abani Roy from India’s Revolutionary Socialist Party calls for banning Israel from selling weapons to India.

While the average Indian has zero tolerance for terrorists, the Israeli action is being generally seen in India as a disproportionate use of force.

Although there is no mass outcry for such action against Israel in India, many people in the streets will tell you they condemn the conflict in Gaza.

“Hamas and Hezbollah firing rockets on Israel is wrong, but Israel's actions in retaliation are not correct either,” said one man.

“Whether it is one organisation or the other – if they take to terror means, if they terrorize innocent civilians – it should be condemned in all forms,” believes another passer-by.
