Tanks storm Red Square... for training

The first training session for the upcoming parade celebrating the anniversary of victory in WWII took place on Red Square Tuesday night.

Approximately 9,000 soldiers and officers from units of the Moscow garrison took part in the parade training, including paratroopers, marines and interior troops. An orchestra of around 1,000 musicians provided the music.

Accompanying the soldiers were armored tanks, combat vehicles, armored personnel carriers, airborne combat vehicles as well as tactile missile systems were rehearsing for the parade marking 64 years since the victory in what in Russia is known as the Great Patriotic War.

Training for the parade had begun in March at a special training ground outside Moscow. Two more night training sessions will be held on April 30 and May 4, with a full rehearsal scheduled for May 7.

“The night training didn't include the fly-past of Air Force planes. On May 9 in the sky over Red Square we will see 69 planes and helicopters of various modifications,” said the Moscow military information and public relations service.

Last year’s parade was the first one in 18 years to feature tanks on Red Square.
