Spartak suffer another blow from cross-town rivals

Spartak suffer another blow from cross-town rivals

The biggest derby in the Russian football calendar has seen Dynamo leapfrog their Moscow city rivals Spartak in an absorbing encounter.

Spartak Moscow 0-2 Dynamo

Heading into the game, Spartak laid just a point above the blue-and-whites in sixth position, but it had put them in serious jeopardy.

With a bad taste in their mouths after the recent Russian Cup defeat, Spartak were striving to take revenge. They took control of the game and had several good opportunities early in the first half, which, however didn’t translate into goals.

Dynamo scored with their first shot. Argentina’s Fernandez perfectly deflected a corner kick by Dmitry Kombarov. Spartak didn’t throw up their hands and continued to dominate. They even scored in one of their attacks, but the goal was disallowed because of a debatable offside.

In the end, Dynamo put the squeeze on their rivals and netted another during injury time, leaving Spartak's hopes of a first Championship title in eight years in serious doubt.

Tom 2-1 Terek

In the first clash of the day, Tom moved up to the top half of the table with a 2-1 win over Terek.

Sergey Kornilenko got the ball rolling for the home side after 27 minutes, finishing off with a surgical move that cut the Terek defence totally in half.

Some concerted attacking from the Chechen side followed and Terek duly got their reward right before the break as Daniel Panku took advantage and slotted the ball home.

Tom, however, had the final say. Their first attempt on goal in the second period was thanks to a header by Goran Maznov.

Amkar 0-1 FC Moscow

Elsewhere, FC Moscow clinched an away win over Amkar to go to the second in the league.

Saturn 0-5 Rubin

Meanwhile, champions Rubin have climbed back to the top of the Premier League after regally thumping Saturn 5-0 away in Saturday's late game.
