Russian press review, 27.12.06

Russian press writes about the situation in Turkmenistan, tries to predict the future of Iran, expresses no doubt concerning the fate of the former leader of Iraq and analyses the present posture of affairs in Russia’s North Caucasus.

“Vremya Novostey” daily newspaper follows the events in Turkmenistan after the Presidents funeral. According to the daily, there are six nominees ready to run for office in the February 11th election.

Previously, the Turkmen Constitution didn’t provide for presidential elections as the deceased leader was president for life.

However, the daily has no doubts about the winner. It is the acting Turkmen president since he has the unanimous support of the People’s Council.

“Nezavisimaya Gazeta” daily newspaper writes about Iran’s future.

The paper quotes a US expert who says Iran will be unable to export oil by 2015. According to him, the ill-managed oil industry and lack of foreign investment will halve Iran’s oil exports in around 5 years.

The expert is sure the country wants nuclear weapons but its nuclear program should be to pursue an alternative energy source.

The daily believes that in the long run Iran will have to be more open to compromise.

According to “Kommersant” business daily, Saddam Hussein’s fate is now sealed. He will be executed, and the paper believes the death penalty for Saddam is the final verdict and will not be revoked.

However, the daily says it will not bring peace to Iraq. On the contrary, Saddam’s execution could spark more bloodshed.

“Nezavisimaya Gazeta” also analyses the situation in Russia’s North Caucasus following an anti-terrorist operation in the republic of Karachayevo-Cherkessia.

According to the daily, it is strange that there is no shortage of people to join anti-terrorist squads. May be it is because law-enforcers get money from the state budget and are keen to show how active they are.

The paper concludes that, the more terrorists in the region the better off the local authorities will be.

Finally,“Vedomosti” daily writes about Christmas and New Year gifts. According to economists, the best present is money. They say giving presents is irrational, besides it undermines the economy.

The daily cites economists who are sure that the most useless gifts are those coming from your relatives.

In addition, it is high time companies stopped exchanging, calendars and pens. They should give the money to charity instead.
