Faldo Series unites rising golf stars in Moscow

The top up-and-coming golf talents from across Europe have flocked to Moscow for the Faldo Series.

The series, which expanded to 30 tournaments in 25 countries during its 13 years, comes to Moscow Country Club for the second time.

”We want to change the image of golf in terms of it being a very rich man’s sport,” Kerry Macdonald, Faldo Series official, said.

The series is aimed at helping young players to “develop and reach the next level”, regardless of gender, race, or financial circumstances.

The series unites youngsters from 10 to 21 years old. The top 60 players will travel to Brazil for the Faldo Series final.

With the Russian Open canceled this season, Russia has certainly made a step back as a golf country.

Kerry McDonald believes juniors’ events become even more important in these circumstances.

“You know, you have to be realistic, you have to, sort of, appreciate that you are not alone. There are other people in the world in the same situation. People are losing their jobs daily. And again, that’s why tournaments like this are important, because you can’t give up. If you want to develop golf in countries like Russia, you can’t give up on programs like this. This where your developments are coming from,” he said.

Being one of the most expensive sports in the world, golf is struggling during the global economic crisis, but with foundations like the Faldo Series keeping things exciting, there is no question that a new Tiger Woods or Padraig Harrington will appear.
