Saddam Hussein’s ex-minister gets seven years in Kurdish case

Saddam Hussein's former deputy prime minister, Tariq Aziz, has been sentenced to seven years in jail for helping to plan the forced displacement of Kurds from northeastern Iraq in the late 1980s.

He had previously been sentenced to 15 years for his role in killing Iraqi merchants in 1992.

Aziz was a key figure in the Saddam circle – and as the English-speaking foreign minister was often the face of the regime for the international community.

Lawyers said the 73-year-old would serve both sentences, totaling 22 years in prison.
