Russians fight their way to President’s Sambo Cup

Russians fight their way to President’s Sambo Cup

Russia have once again won the annual President's Sambo Cup held in Moscow.

The tournament was established in 2007, and since then the event has become the unofficial team World championships.

This time eight national teams took part in the event, and in the decider the hosts faced a tough Belarusian outfit.

The tie was closely-matched, but the Russians, who had five reigning world champions on the team, eventually took the win 6-3.

Ukraine overtook Georgia in the battle for third place.

For those maybe not familiar with the sport, Sambo is a form of self-defense, established in Russia around 70 years ago.

The Moscow event is part of preparations for the solo World Championships, due to take place in October.
