Kremlin guards take winter break

The Presidential Regiment has held its final Changing of the Guard ceremony at the Kremlin this year. Despite bad weather, the historic costumes, majestic horses and a military orchestra attracted scores of spectators.

The Changing of the Guard ceremony involves infantry and cavalry and takes place every Saturday at the Kremlin from April to November.

The tradition, dating back to the 18th Century, was only revived four years ago, after being stopped during Soviet times. The spectacular performance always draws plenty of tourists and locals.

The Kremlin Guards are an elite regiment and selection for the applicants is strict. Those lucky enough to enter the unique unit then undergo months of intense training.
