CSKA claim first Champions League win

CSKA claim first Champions League win

CSKA Moscow have won their first UEFA Champions League game after taking the better of Besiktas at home in Luzhniki stadium.

Both teams lost their opening games and a defeat in Wednesday’s clash would have been a serious blow for hopes of progressing from the group stage.

The hosts started straight off the bat, with Alan Dzagoev putting his team in the lead six minutes into the match.

The 19-year-old received the ball at the edge of the box after Tomas Necid’s back-heel and delivered a stunning dipping shot behind the back of keeper Rustu Recber, 1-0.

The youngster, whose every move is closely followed by Real Madrid scouts, got his second goal in two matches in the tournament.

The Turks could have grabbed a fast equalizer, but netminder Igor Akinfeev stood firm after a rendezvous with Filip Holosko.

The next goal of the game came only in the second half, and again CSKA was the bearer of bad news for Besiktas. Milos Krasic ended his solo run with a splendid shot past a despondent Rustu, 2-0.

Besiktas, who have never lost to a Russian side before, didn’t give up playing till the very end, and were, eventually, awarded with a conciliation goal in stoppage time. But it was all they could achieve on the night, with the Army Men cruising to a 2-1 win.

“Today’s Champions League match was important for both teams as they both started with defeats. That’s why we were preparing very seriously. We had a great start, scored a fast goal, and were looking good in some moments in the first half. We scored the second goal in the second half, but, probably, did it a bit early, because I noticed that some players started looking too relaxed. We conceded an unnecessary goal in the end, but today the main thing is a win,” CSKA manager Juande Ramos told Sportbox.ru.

In another Group B match, Manchester United maintained a 100% record in the competition by beating Wolfsburg at Old Trafford.

It wasn’t easy at all for last year’s Champions League runners up. United wasted a lot of chances in the first half, and the Germans punished their rivals by taking the lead after the break.

Edin Dzeko stunned the home crowd with a header after a cross from Makoto Hasebe, but he couldn’t stun Man U.

The Red Devils equalized three minutes later after a free-kick from Ryan Giggs. The winner came 12 minutes from time with Michael Carrick curling the ball in for a 2-1 finish.

Manchester United top the Group B table with two wins out of two, Wolfsburg and CSKA are tied for second spot with three points, while Besiktas lags at zero.

Man U will head to Moscow next to face CSKA on October 21, while Wolfsburg might give Besiktas a holiday to remember in Germany.
