Contador suspended after failing doping test

Cycling has been rocked by another drugs scandal as three-time Tour de France champion Alberto Contador tested positive for a banned stimulant and has been suspended from the sport.

Contador has admitted that a small amount of clenbuterol was found in his system after one of the stages of this year's Tour De France.

The drug is a stimulant that boosts the flow of oxygen in the blood stream.

The Spaniard, who went on to win the yellow jersey for a third time, has now been provisionally suspended by the sports governing body the UCI.

“This case required further scientific investigation before any conclusion could be drawn. The UCI continues working with the scientific support of WADA to analyze all the elements that are relevant to the case,” said the statement by the International Cycling Union.

Although Contador says he has been a victim of food contamination – he will face a two-year ban if the use of clenbuterol is confirmed.
