Skobrev defends Russian speed-skating title

All-round world and European speed-skating champion Ivan Skobrev has successfully defended his national title in Moscow.

Vancouver Olympic silver medalist Skobrev took an early lead in the three-day event after finishing first in the 1500m race.

Despite posting a third-best result in sprint the following day, the champ still retained his lead by winning the 5K run.

Skobrev cemented his triumph on the final day of the competition with a convincing victory in 10 the kilometers.

“I‘ve successfully completed an intensive training and competition period and I am in good condition,” he said. “I won podium spots several times so everything is fine and I like the way things are going. I am very pleased with my results at the Russian championships.  Now, I am going to train for the European championships which will be an outdoor event. So, apart from the rivals battling for the title, the weather may also create some difficulties.”

The European Speed Skating championship are scheduled to take place in Hungary at the beginning of January.
