Afghan parliament rejects majority of Karzai’s nominees for new cabinet

Seventeen out of 24 proposed candidates were turned down, including a former warlord and the country's only female minister. The rejection is seen as a serious setback to Karzai’s second term presidency.

Allegedly, the nominations were aimed at maintaining 12 current ministers in their posts for a second term to meet Western desires to keep trusted hands in place.

Karzai has already stated that he would present new nominees, though it remains unclear exactly when the names are to be announced.

Also, the chief of Afghanistan's elections commission announced that parliamentary elections would be held on 22 May, the Guardian reports.
