Champions League: Chelsea and Barcelona near semis

Champions League: Chelsea and Barcelona near semis

Chelsea and Barcelona have one big foot in the last four of the Champions League following their stunning victories against Liverpool and Bayern Munich respectively.

The Londoners won 3-1 on the road, while Barcelona were unstoppable in their clash against the Germans, blitzing them 4-0 at Nou Camp.

But the biggest surprise of the night clearly arose in northwestern England.

Fernando Torres looked to have begun another memorable European evening for Liverpool, finding the net after just half a dozen minutes.

But a brace from former Lokomotiv Moscow defender Branislav Ivanovic, and a strike from Didier Drogba hushed the home crowd and sent the visitors into raptures.

3-1 for Chelsea means Liverpool need to score at least three at Stamford Bridge in a fortnight to progress.

The night's other quarter-final match-up was straightforward, to say the least.

Four goals in 34 minutes confirmed Barcelona's dominance over a hapless Bayern Munich side.

A Samuel Eto goal was sandwiched between two from Lionel Messi, while the third spoke in their forward wheel, Thierry Henry, sealed the deal at 43 minutes.

On Tuesday, the Manchester United-Porto and Villarreal-Arsenal games finished all square.
