Taliban targets Afghan peace conference

The Taliban's attacked a national peace conference in the Afghan capital, sparking fierce gun battles outside the venue.

At least two suspected militants were killed and one captured. None of the delegates were hurt.

The peace jirga has been attended by around 1,600 participants, including tribal elders and parliamentarians and civil society members. The inauguration ceremony opened with a speech by President Hamid Karzai calling on all the parties in Afghanistan to participate in the “national reconciliation”. But within minutes it was disrupted by an explosion outside the huge tent pitched on a university compound.

The Taliban targeted the huge fence erected specially for the conference with rockets. Suicide bombers and militants were involved in the attack.
