Talks on North Korea’s issue ‘very useful’: Russia’s chief negotiator

Talks on North Korea’s issue ‘very useful’: Russia’s chief negotiator

Though Moscow is not expecting a breakthrough at the upcoming six-party talks on the North Korean nuclear issue, head of the Russian delegation says the consultations held with the United States and South Korea inspire some optimism.

Aleksandr Losyukov, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister and head of the country’s delegation, plans to hold preliminary meetings with his partners.

And the talks aimed at getting the DPRK to abandon its nuclear programme are due to resume on Thursday in Beijing.

Previous rounds of talks “were not sporadic, they were intentional meetings,” the head of Russia’s delegation stresses calling the intercourse “very useful” as it gave all parties a chance “to exchange views, to clarify the situation.”

Mr Losyukov also calls on his international partners “to make stress on particular details, on particular agreements in order to push the whole process forward and to focus, in particular, on intersession activity.”

Summing up his exclusive interview for Russia Today, the deputy foreign minister remarked: «…this must be done in order to achieve some results, because sporadic plenary sessions once or twice a year are not at all enough. There is some job to be done in-between.»
