Moscow court drops case against former Yukos VP

Moscow’s Simonovsky court has closed the case against the former vice president of oil company Yukos, Vasily Aleksanyan, because the statute of limitations has expired.

Earlier Aleksanyan agreed to a dismissal of his case on non-rehabilitating circumstances.

“I have got a degree in Law and I clearly understand what the consequences will be if the case is dropped without exoneration,” he told the Simonovsky court on Thursday, Itar-Tass writes. “But I have no time to strive for truth, therefore I do not object.”

Expiry of the periods of limitations became the ground for the case to be dropped. However, the person on trial in these circumstances will not be exonerated.

Aleksanyan is suffering from severe illnesses – AIDS and cancer. He appeared at the court wearing a mask and was coughing. He was accused of embezzling about $330 million from former Yukos production unit Tomskneft, and shares worth $493 million from other oil companies. Aleksanyan was also accused of money laundering.

The former oil company’s VP had spent three years behind bars. However, as his health had severely deteriorated, he was released from custody in 2008 after paying a 50 million rouble bail bond ($1.7 million).

Earlier this month the Moscow City Court ruled that he could be freed on bail due to his worsening health.
