OSCE can appropriately respond to crises – Lavrov

Russia is against playing down the security role of the Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced at an informal OSCE meeting on Saturday, Interfax reported.

“Our organization is capable of responding to crises and, most importantly, acting only in response to requests from a host country. Everything will be okay in this case," stated Lavrov who is taking part in a ministerial summit in Kazakhstan.

Russia's Foreign Minister also said that European countries are recognizing the potential merits of a new pan-European security treaty proposed by Dmitry Medvedev. He said the project has its opponents, but there is unanimous agreement that Europe's security system should be changed.

The recent Kyrgyz riots have also been at the centre of discussions, with proposals to set up a crisis management center to prevent future unrest.

It was also agreed that some fifty police advisors would be deployed to help bring stability to the unsettled region.
