Heating restored in Elektrostal, Moscow region
Thousands of residents of the town of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region have had their heating restored after a power failure. The city's main heating pipeline failed on Friday leaving about 200 apartment buildings with no central heating.
Temperatures in the region dropped to as low as minus 20 degrees centigrade. The failure occurred when an electrical power surge damaged equipment in the local boiler house. When power was restored, high water pressure burst the central heating pipe. Some households were connected to a reserve heating system during repair works. As the heaters are filled with a new supply of water, they are being closely monitored to avoid more bursts.
